This weekend, 153 British schoolgirls will take to the slopes in Flaine for the 53rd Schoolgirls Ski Championships, organised by The Ladies Ski Club.

Teams of girls aged 11-18 from over 40 schools will take part in this annual event, held in Flaine, Haute Savoie, for the past 20 years. With excellent snow this year it promises to be an exciting weekend with excellent skiing.

After training on Sunday, the girls will ski 2 runs in the Giant Slalom race on Monday followed by the Team Parallel Slalom. Competition is fierce between the schools in this exciting knockout event.

Daily Telegraph Consumer correspondent Gill Charlton answers readers travel questions in her weekly column.

On Saturday 17th September 2011 she was asked a question on a medical and curtailment insurance claim.

The reader’s query was over a claim made after a fractured tibia on the first day of her holiday. This kept her in hospital until what would have been the last day of her holiday when she was declared fit enough to fly home.

In 1948 Oxford student John Pettifer attended the Varsity Ski Championships in Sestria in Italy, his first ski trip aged 28.

Skiing soon became his passion and after graduating saw the need to insure partakers in this seemingly dangerous pastime.  Springs of the old bindings snapping against ankles, skis that don’t simply fall off after a seemingly gentle fall – costs for mountain rescue started rising.
